Introduction to Sewing Lingerie and Underwear 2 Day Sewing Course

2 x

Whether sultry or practical, well-fitting underwear can be expensive and tricky to find. So why not create your own! Increase your knowledge in working with stretch or bias-cut woven fabrics. Open up a whole new world of sewing, along with a new section of your me-made wardrobe, in this 2 day intro to undergarments, taught by the knowledgeable Susan from Measure Twice Cut Once Patterns.

By the end of the course you'll have tackled a woven underwear pattern, a knit underwear pattern and a soft cup bra (or singlet if you prefer not to sew the bra).

This course is designed for women, men or non-binary sewists who are fairly confident sewing with woven fabrics but may not have tried stretchy fabrics yet. We recommend that prior to booking in, you should have completed 1 to 2 garments of any kind, relatively trouble free, following a commercial pattern so you can get the most out of the intermediate to advanced content.

We assume attendees have full competency in operating a sewing machine and are comfortable reading patterns and working on their own when attending this intermediate sewing class (see Beginners Learn to Sew Clothing first, if you don't fit this criteria). Refunds will not be available if you have incorrectly assumed your skill level for this course.

In the interest of getting people to complete projects easily, we've limited the projects that we will tackle as a group. You'll receive ONE of the following complimentary Measure Twice Cut Once lingerie patterns on day one, and use a plain woven fabric to create a pair of everyday undies:

  • Measure Twice Cut Once Charlotte full coverage brief
  • Measure Twice Cut Once Georgiana bikini brief
  • Measure Twice Cut Once Lydia thong
  • Measure Twice Cut Once Lizzie string bikini
  • Measure Twice Cut Once Darcy boxer shorts

The pattern of your choice introduces you to using woven fabric cut on the bias, applying plush back elastic and using an overlocker to create a roll hem edge. Taking these new-found skills, we'll then apply them to making a pair of underpants using knit fabric. We'll discuss getting the fit correct as well as ways of applying a variety of elastics to get different desired styles.

Day 2 will be dedicated to extending our techniques by tackling the fundamentals of bra-making, starting with a soft cup bra. This day will cover bra-specific fitting skills, which are a complex world of sewing on their own. The aim is to equip you with greater confidence in sewing stretchy materials and elastics without distorting them, which will lead to better fit. This course doesn't cover underwired bras, but stay tuned!

Bobbin and Ink is an LGBTIQ safe space, so to make the course accommodating of all genders, if you prefer not to make a bra on day 2, alternative pattern options are available. A fitted singlet or sewing multiple pairs of underwear are all possible. Please enquire if you have any questions or requests regarding the content on day 2. We want to welcome as many sewists as possible to attend.

The weekend course runs from 10am - 4pm across 2 days and includes a 1 hour lunch break each day. Please let us know in advance if you need to use our sewing machines and/or overlocker for the course, otherwise we will assume you're bringing your own to use. We also have a coverstitch on site that may be used for certain parts of your garment.

With a maximum number of 6 students per class, you'll get comforting one-on-one time with your knowledgeable teacher, Susan Goodwin of Measure Twice Cut Once.
