We're turning trash into treasure at Bobbin and Ink! This sewing workshop is being run as part of 2022 Sydney Craft Week and asks you to think about what waste fundamentally is and what you can do to responsibly repurpose discarded threads and fabric scraps into new textiles and garments. Together we'll push the limits of whether zero waste sewing is an achievable, everyday dream.

Participants in this workshop will choose from one of a handful of simple sewing projects to work on that will take the plentiful thread and fabric remnants left over from sewing classes in our studio and turn them into a wearable new thing! Feel free to bring your own scraps from home to use up if you prefer. Choose from a variety of hat styles (baseball cap, bucket hat, sunhat, beanie, etc), slippers, slides or an apron for your final project.

This class assumes no sewing knowledge and will start with a quick intro to how to use a sewing machine. We will also cater the content to those with a little bit of sewing experience so everyone feels a little challenged but capable of achieving great results on the day.

Bobbin and Ink is an LGBTQI+ safe space and this course welcomes women, men and anyone identifying otherwise. The content of the class is geared towards adults and older teens (15+ years). If you know a younger teen or child who wants to learn to sew, you might want to check out our Kids and Teens Learn to Sew Clothes Course first.

The Sydney Craft Week Festival run by the Australian Design Centre begins on 7 October with 180+ events including 80+ workshops and 38+ exhibitions across 45 suburbs. This is the first and only festival in Sydney dedicated to making by hand.

This year events focus on the climate emergency, sustainable practice and making a difference for the environment. Check their website out for more info!
